InterCAD Services Ltd. needed to maintain low level flows in the creek, so they would not dry up and impact the environment. At the same time, InterCAD Services needed to divert excess creek flows during heavy rain storms by diverting the rainwater directly to the Pacific Ocean.
Intake structures were installed in the creeks to reroute heavy stormwater into the pipe, while retaining base flows within the creek. All stormwater flows up to a two-year rain event remain in the creeks, but any water flowing above the two-year level is split off between the creeks and diversion pipe. The pipe diversion is designed to function up to a 200-year storm event and provides protection to around 500 acres containing numerous homes.
Originally, the plan was to use reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), but to meet hydraulic design considerations and to provide protection against abrasion, SaniTite HP was chosen. InterCAD Services also cited SaniTite HP’s durability in choosing the pipe.
The main leg of the pipeline used 800 m (2,625’) of 1500 mm (60”) SaniTite HP pipe. The second leg of the project utilized 1200 m (3,940’) of 900-1500 mm (36”-60”) SaniTite HP.
Complete Utility Contractors Ltd installed the new pipeline and found SaniTite HP to be a “quicker installation” than RCP because of its light weight and longer sections - 6 m (20’) sections compared to 2.4 m (8’) sections of RCP. The contractor was able to install SaniTite HP quickly through residential areas because of fewer joints and the ease of pushing the pipe together.
Portions of the SaniTite HP pipe came with special five-degree mitres, which were fabricated by ADS. The five-degree mitres allowed the pipe to be placed around and within existing roads and underground utilities and services. ADS also fabricated risers with ladders in specific pipe sections to act as a manhole.
