Moncton Route 2 Mapleton Road Roundabout
A two-lane roundabout was built on the westbound Trans-Canada Highway at Mapleton Road in Moncton to improve traffic flow and safety.

PRODUCTS USED

CHALLENGE

The roundabout addressed congestion caused by vehicles exiting the highway and turning left onto Mapleton Road. The left-turning vehicles resulted in traffic backing up onto the highway creating unsafe conditions. In order to create the roundabout, new stormwater drainage was needed in the area.

SOLUTION

N-12 Dual Wall pipe is listed in the City of Moncton’s stormwater drainage specifications, enabling ADS representatives to flip the design from reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) to N-12. Using ADS’ Pipe Value Tool, ADS demonstrated the total installed cost savings of N-12, manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), compared to RCP.

By installing 543 m (1,780’) of N-12 pipe, the contractor benefited from savings on the total cost of installation. The lightweight pipe also allowed for faster installation, easier onsite storage and a 59 percent reduction in the number of joints required for the project.

The large diameter N-12 pipe was used for the main lines, with smaller diameters serving as laterals. The main lines tied into existing storm sewer infrastructure at multiple manholes, with one 30-inch Mar Mac® coupler used to connect the N-12 pipe to an existing storm sewer line.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS

N-12 has a corrugated exterior and smooth interior wall that provide exceptional hydraulics, strength and corrosion resistance. N-12 is available in 100-1500 mm (4”-60”) diameters and in 6 m (20’) lengths to provide faster installation and lower installation costs. The integrated inline bell design allows for easy installation and eliminates chipping and cracking that is common to concrete bells. N-12 addresses subsurface and stormwater gravity-flow drainage needs.
